“Helen Keller: Champion of the Disabled” Sheryl Faye Presents - 2026

Grade 3

Introduction

Students attended the interactive presentation of Helen Keller (a one-time Wrentham resident) which displayed the positive character traits of an individual who has persevered to overcome challenges in the world.

Grant Details

Students will be deeply moved and mesmerized by this portrayal of Helen, a feisty little girl no different than any other child beyond her inability to see or hear. They will revel in Helen's discovery of languages as she rises above her challenges to become "joyous, strong, and equal to my limitations". She relives her graduation from college and the writing of her 12 books, and shows how she learned to speak and read in Braille. Helen's story helps children understand and accept differences and inspires them to be the best they can be with the talents they possess. (From SherylFaye.com)

Highlights

The third graders learn about local history as part of the MA state standards in History and Geography, which includes influential people of the past. Helen Keller often shared that her years living in Wrentham were very happy and that she would always think of Wrentham as home. Sheryl Faye, as she performed Helen Keller's life story, had our third graders convinced they were witnessing Helen Keller adapting to the challenges she encourntered as a blind and deaf child. The performance ended with the children having the opportunity to ask questions about Helen Keller's life as well as Sheryl's job as an actress. To top it all off - the children were shown Helen Keller's bathing suit, which she left in Wrentham when she moved! They were thrilled not only with the amazing performance, but also with a gift left by Helen!
