Discovery Museum Traveling Workshop - Force & Magnetism - 2026
Grade 3
Introduction
Force & Magnetism workshop
Grant Details
The goal of this grant was to extend third graders’ knowledge of physical science standards. Its aim is to provide a hands-on, investigatory workshop to engage with forces, magnets, and the interactions between them. The presentation is run by experts from the Discovery Museum in Acton who are trained in STEM instruction and facilitation for elementary students.
Students were introduced to physical science vocabulary including force, balanced forces, unbalanced forces, magnets, attracting forces, and repelling forces.
Students gained hands-on experience with magnets to experiment with their attracting/repelling forces, poles, and practical uses.
Students interactied with and created a variety of objects that move through the use of forces and magnetism, including a magnetic field viewing chamber.

Highlights
Students learned how an electromagnet worked!
Students discovered how magents work within everyday objects through hands-on experimentation.
Students created their own magnetic field viewing chambers to take home!
